"Jeremy Bentham Revisited" is a video work that deals with a current social and political issue, the surveillance of the individual in public space. At the center of this work is a historical figure, namely Jeremy Bentham, the founder of utilitarianism and inventor of the panopticon. His remains have been on view for many decades as a so-called autoicon in a box in London's University College. During my research, I happened to learn that Marcel Broodthaers realized a short film in 1974 entitled "Figures of Wax," in which he asks Jeremy Bentham a few, rather trivial, questions. The film was shown publicly only once and has been under lock and key ever since. This is how the idea of an interview with Jeremy Bentham on current issues came about.
