The Frog and the Scorpion, 2022
Istvan Balogh’s video montage *The Frog and the Scorpion* (2022) is based on the fable of the frog and the scorpion, which has been passed down since the 12th century, and retells it using found footage. The fable has frequently found its way into popular culture since the 1950s and has been interpreted in various ways in numerous feature films. At the heart of the work is the question of whether humans, with reason and foresight, can act more wisely than the animal in the fable, whose actions are determined by its character traits: In the fable, a frog agrees to carry the scorpion across the river after the scorpion promises not to kill the frog by stinging it. Against its better judgment, the scorpion stings the frog in the middle of the river, and both animals die.
