Vatermörder/Parricide, 2016

Lambda-Print, 35 x 31 cm

Given the rich context that Istvan Balogh has created with his exhibition at Kunstraum Baden, it comes as no surprise that an old acquaintance, Sigmund Freud, is lurking somewhere in the background. He hangs, completely hidden, on the back of one of the walls. Of course, the artist is not satisfied with a simple reference and adds an additional layer by casually pasting an old-fashioned shirt collar onto the image of the discoverer of the unconscious and the superego. “Parricide”—father-killer—is the name of these collars. The allusion to Freud’s Oedipus complex, which culminates in patricide, also served as the inspiration for the seven-part collar installation on the deep blue wall.
